Dr. John U. Trefny is President Emeritus of the Colorado School of Mines (2000-2006) and previously served for nearly five years as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. He previously served Mines as Professor of Physics and Head of the Department of Physics. During his career at Mines, Dr. Trefny was active in pre-college education, serving from 1986 until 2000 as Coordinator of Teacher Enhancement Programs there. During that time, he and his colleagues developed the largest college-based program in the State of Colorado for the professional development of K-12 teachers in science and mathematics. Partnerships were formed between Mines and several nearby school districts including Adams 50 and Jefferson County R1.
Dr. Trefny received his undergraduate education at Fordham University and the Ph.D. in Physics from Rutgers University. Subsequently he held appointments at Cornell University and at Wesleyan University before joining Mines in 1977. He has published widely in various fields of condensed-matter physics. He has received many awards and recognitions for teaching.
A resident of Jefferson County since 1977, Dr. Trefny has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra and also treasurer of the organization. Nationally, John served on the Advisory Board of Sigma Xi and The Scientific Research Society. He currently serves on the Boards of the Red Rocks Community College Foundation, the Midwest Research Institute (MRI), the LMC Community Foundation, WorldDenver, and the Golden Civic Foundation.
