About Simon Schuchat

Simon Schuchat is a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer with three decades of experience in East Asia and the former Soviet Union, including overseas service in Beijing, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong – where he led the combined Political and Economic Section – and Shanghai. His Washington assignments included stints as Chief Economist in the Office of Russian Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Japan Affairs. He holds degrees from the University of Chicago, Yale University, Harvard University, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University. At the beginning of the reform era, he was a “Foreign Expert” at Fudan University in Shanghai. He is fluent in Mandarin and has a working knowledge of Japanese and Russian.
