The International Women of Courage (IWOC) is the prestigious U.S. Secretary of State’s Award which recognizes women around the world who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment and playing transformative roles in their societies. This year, Secretary Tillerson will honor 12 women who have been chosen for their bravery and for putting their lives at personal risk to help others. The awards will be presented by First Lady Melania Trump in a ceremony in Washington, DC on March 29th. Names of recipients will be released at that time.
One of the IWOC award winners will visit Denver. She is a gender-based violence (GBV) activist from Botswana who has dedicated her life to teaching young girls to fight against gender oppression and domestic abuse. She is an advocate for the advancement of women in sports with a particular focus on women with disabilities and those whose disability is the result of GBV.
