The World Affairs Council of America is partnered with the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF) to offer a year-long program on Turkish culture in 2013. The World Affairs Council of Denver has been chosen to participate in the program. The goal is for Denver teachers to complete the program with the in-depth knowledge and tools to incorporate lessons about Turkish culture and society into their classrooms.
The program will consist of 3 stages:
Stage 1: free workshop on Turkey for middle and high school teachers
•Date: March 16th, 2013
•Location: Teleconference Room, Rocky Mountain PBS. 1089 Bannock St. Denver, CO 80204 (parking is free in PBS lot. Enter through side door where there will be red balloons).
Presentation 1: “Turkish Culture, History & Modern Politics” by Dr. Robert Hazan, member of Turkish American Cultural Society of Colorado and Chair of the Political Science Department at Metro University. His research and teaching concentrate on political theory, political economy, international affairs, and the politics of the Middle East.
Presentation 2: Talk on “Turkish food” by Dr. Fahriye Sancar who teaches Turkish architecture, urban planning, and Turkish classical music at CU Denver. Dr. Sancar previously gave this presentation at the Smithsonian in DC.
•Activities: Turkish coffee demonstration, taste Turkish cuisine homemade by a member of the local Turkish community, live Turkish music, enjoy film about Summer Study Tour in Turkey, and a lesson on how to incorporate Turkish culture into the classroom.
•Teachers will receive the application for the June 27 - July 11 Study Tour of Turkey at the end of the workshop
Stage 2: 14-day Study Tour of Turkey this summer 2013. The program of this tour will be designed by the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF). Of the teachers that apply for the program after our workshop, 4 will be selected to go to Turkey. All expenses in Turkey and travel to Turkey from a TCF designated airport will be paid for by the Turkish Cultural Foundation. At a maximum, selected teachers would be required to pay domestic travel to a TCF designated airport, and a registration fee no more than $800, as well as about $25 in visa fees. There will be 28 total teachers on the tour, from around the U.S.
Proposed Dates for 2013 Teacher Study Tour: June 27 to July 11, 2013
Stage 3: Portrait of Turkey: event open to the community to learn about the teachers' experiences in the program.
Not every teacher is eligible to apply for the Turkey Study Tour; please read the following requirements carefully:
•Must have sound physical health and is able to participate in a physcially rigorous program that involves early morning departures, extended bus travel, multiple outdoor site visits and walking in hot weather during the tour.
•Has been for the past 3-4 years and is currently employed full-time as a classroom teacher, particularly in social sciences (excluding math, science and language) in a 6-12 school in Denver and will be employed full-time as a classroom teacher in a 6-12 school next year.
•Possess a valid U.S. passport and/or ability to acquire a U.S. passport upon notification of acceptance for the trip.
•Has not lived in or traveled to Turkey during the past 10 years.
