    About Miguel Basáñez 

    Ambassador Miguel Basáñez earned a bachelor’s degree in law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1969 and followed that in 1974 with an M.A. in public administration from Britain’s University of Warwick. Basáñez then earned a Ph.D. in political sociology from the London School of Economics in 1980. By the mid-1980s, Basáñez was attorney general of the state of Mexico, which surrounds Mexico City. Beginning in 1986, he was private secretary to Secretary of Energy Alfredo del Mazo.

    Basáñez pioneered modern political polling in Mexico. In 1988, he conducted the first public opinion polls for a Mexican election. He continued conducting polls, often for U.S. and Canadian media outlets and was on the board of Este Pais, a magazine that used monthly opinion polls to explore public feelings on political and social issues. From 1999 to 2000, Basáñez was president of the World Association for Public Opinion Research. In 2005, Basáñez became chief pollster and advisor to state of Mexico then-governor del Mazo. More recently, Basáñez has been professor of values, culture and development at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Diplomacy. He also served as director of special research and educational project. Basáñez is a former ambassador to the United States and has written over a dozen books on values, politics, and public opinion.

    About Anne Richard

    Anne C. Richard was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration on April 2, 2012. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Richard was the vice president of government relations and advocacy for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an international aid agency that helps refugees, internally displaced and other victims of conflict. She was also a non-resident Fellow of the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University/SAIS and a board member of the Henry L. Stimson Center.

    From 1999 to 2001, Ms. Richard was Director of the Secretary’s Office of Resources, Plans and Policy at the State Department. From 1997 to 1999, she was the deputy chief financial officer of the Peace Corps. Earlier, she served as a Senior Advisor in the Deputy Secretary’s Office of Policy and Resources at the State Department and as a Budget Examiner at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

    From 1993 to 1994, Ms. Richard was an International Affairs Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations and was part of the team that created the International Crisis Group. From 1985 to 1986, she was a fellow of the Robert Bosch Foundation in Germany. She first joined the U.S. government in 1984 as a Presidential Management Intern. Ms. Richard has authored several monographs and reports and numerous opinion pieces on topics including: international coordination of foreign assistance; combating terrorism; strategies to make foreign aid more cost effective; and specific humanitarian crises from Haiti to South Sudan to Afghanistan.

    Ms. Richard has a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and an M.A. in Public Policy Studies from the University of Chicago. She has lived overseas in Austria, Germany and France. She is married with two children.

    WorldDenver is hosting 5 Fellows from the U.S. State Department’s Russian Business Leaders (RBL) professional exchange program! The program for these young business professionals from Russia includes: work-site placements at local businesses, intensive mentorship and leadership development sessions, as well as staying at a local home thanks to WorldDenver's wonderful Homestay Host volunteers!

    The Fellows were selected through a highly competitive process by the U.S. Department of State, American Councils for International Education and its partners, fellows represent the next generation of emerging business leaders (ages 22 to 27) from Russia

    About T.R. Reid

    At The Washington Post, T.R. Reid covered Congress and four presidential campaigns, served as the paper's bureau chief in Tokyo and London, and has reported from 4 dozen countries on five continents. T. R. Reid has written ten books in English and three in Japanese, and translated one book from the Japanese. His 2009 book "The Healing of America" became a national best-seller. PBS Frontline made two documentaries, "Sick Around the World" and "India--A Second Opinion" following Reid as he did the reporting for that book. T. R. Reid's newest book: "A Fine Mess -- A Global Quest for a Fairer, Simpler, and More Efficient Tax Code" was published in April, 2017. It suggest what the U.S. should and should not do as Congress embarks on a major effort at reforming our federal tax system. T. R. Reid has made documentary films for National Geographic Television, PBS, and the A&E Network. His latest PBS film was "U.S. Health Care: The Good News," which is being broadcast by PBS affiliates around the country. Reid is Chair of the Board of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, a $54 million operation that serves tens of thousands of Coloradans. He has served as Kai-cho, or President, of the Japan-America Society of Colorado. He is Chairman of the Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care, the state-wide citizens' campaign working for universal health care coverage. He has served on the boards of Princeton University and several other community and national organizations. 

    Reid's book, A Fine Mess: A Global Quest for a Fairer, Simpler, and More Efficient Tax Code, will be available for purchase at this event. The WorldDenver Young Professionals will also be hosting a book club prior to the event, with the book available on via Amazon Smile.
