Peace Day Challenge

WorldDenver launched its version of the Peace Day Challenge in 2016 as an opportunity for our community to participate in activities that promote peace and raise awareness of the International Day of Peace.

What is the International Day of Peace?

The United Nations defines the International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") as a globally shared date for all of humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace. It was established by two UN resolutions in 1981, and is observed each year on September 21. For more information, visit

What is a Culture of Peace?

According to the UN, a culture of peace is "a set of values, attitudes, modes of behavior, and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solves problems through dialogue and negotiations among individuals, groups, and nations." The concept of a culture of peace has now grown into a global movement.

What is the Peace Day Challenge?

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) explains that the Peace Day Challenge exists as a way to inspire a day of action focused on building peace through real-life activities. Individuals, groups, or communities engage in an activity on or around September 21 and then share it on social media in order to raise awareness and promote peace. According to USIP, in 2015, the Peace Day Challenge reached 21 million people in 129 countries on social media, engaged dozens of organizations, and inspired activities in 36 countries and 21 US states.

What is the WorldDenver Peace Day Challenge?

WorldDenver is launching its inaugural Peace Day Challenge to celebrate the 2016 International Day of Peace. We are challenging WorldDenver members and alumni, local organizations and businesses, and others in the community to pledge to participate in an activity to build or promote peace, and raise awareness of the International Day of Peace.

How do I participate in WorldDenver's Peace Day Challenge?

First, decide on what action you will take. Then pledge to do it. Afterwards, share your pledges, experiences, and documentation (photos and videos are encouraged!) on Facebook ( and other social media with the hashtag #WorldDenverPeaceChallenge. On September 21st, WorldDenver staff will choose some of our favorite ideas and activities from the submissions and share them on our pages.

What if I don't have Facebook or other social media?

Send us your commitments, experiences, and documentation via e-mail at

What if I can't think of an activity to do?

Check out the UN's website to find ideas for all ages!

Why is WorldDenver having a Peace Day Challenge?

The Peace Day Challenge contributes to our mission, which is "to strengthen and expand the community of engaged global citizens and organizations in Colorado..." and confirms our values of being globally-focused, member-focused, and community-focused. We also believe it is a fun way to promote an important concept and an internationally-celebrated day.
