International Women's Day

What is International Women's Day?

Each year on March 8th, countries around the world lift up the achievements of women leaders in their societies to recognize and celebrate the leadership role that women play in business, academia, government, community-building, and families. Started by women in Europe just after the turn of the 20th Century, International Women’s Day had its roots in the labor movement and quickly embraced universal suffrage as well.  Modern celebrations of International Women’s Day are as varied as the cultures of the world; in many countries, International Women’s Day is a national holiday.

What is the Denver celebration going to look like?

WorldDenver’s event has become Colorado’s premier celebration of International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is women in technology. The format of the event is a morning educational program that is no cost and open to the community. This year, the morning program will consist of a finalist pitch competition geared to women college and university students with ventures in tech. (A “Big Pitch” competition will be held on February 23rd.)  Following the pitch competition, women experts will discuss the status of women in technology and offer hints and tips for career success in the field.

The luncheon portion of the day is a fundraiser for WorldDenver’s community programs. This year's event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Denver from 9:00AM-1:30 PM. This year’s keynote luncheon speaker is Adriana Gascoigne, Founder and CEO of Girls in Tech, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization devoted to empowering, educating and engaging women in the tech industry across 60 chapters in 36 countries.

No stranger to growing brands and building amazing companies, Adriana has worked with tech companies like Indiegogo, Oracle’s Involver, and Change.org. She has also served in executive roles at Ogilvy & Mather, Interpublic Group of Companies, Social Gaming Network (SGN), and SecondMarket. Adriana will also be joining our top sponsors for a VIP reception on the evening of March 7th.

WorldDenver is collaborating with other organizations to place our luncheon in a series of events that will be called “Week of Women” beginning March 4, 2019.

How can I participate?

Currently, we are soliciting corporate sponsors for the luncheon and pitch competition. If your company is interested in a sponsorship, please contact Executive Director Karen de Bartolome (kdebartolome@WorldDenver.org) or call her at 720-330-9278. Luncheon sponsorship forms can be found here.   Individual tickets will go on sale in late January.
