About Our Speakers

Simon Maghakyan
Scholar and Founder, Heritage Intel

Simon Maghakyan is a Denver-based academic and advocate, whom The Los Angeles Times has called “relentless,” and whose investigative research has been praised as “groundbreaking” by Forbes and “rock solid” by The Guardian. He is a Community Scholar at the University of Denver’s Korbel School of International Studies, a Visiting Scholar at Tufts University, the incoming Kazan Visiting Professor at California State University, Fresno, an incoming non-resident Postdoctoral Fellow with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford.

Maghakyan’s pioneering investigative exposés of Azerbaijan’s ongoing erasure of Armenian religious heritage have been cited at the International Court of Justice and by the U.S. State Department, among other global bodies. In addition to academia and journalism, Maghakyan has practical experiences in non-partisan legislative service, community organizing, human rights advocacy, and executive leadership. His local community accomplishments include the spearheading of the Colorado State Capitol khachkar monument, which memorializes the victims of all crimes against humanity, and the Sardarapat Armenian Memorial Highway in Centennial, as well as co-initiating Colorado’s Holocaust and Genocide Education Law. Maghakyan’s written and spoken insights have appeared in numerous media outlets, including the BBC, The Denver Post, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. He and his wife Angela have one child — Jacob — who just turned four years old.

Note: As a nonpartisan convener of global affairs programming, WorldDenver provides an unbiased forum for experts, world leaders, diplomats, and representatives from the public and private sectors to share their expertise and views on a broad spectrum of issues that matter to the world. We aim for our events to inspire curiosity and further reading, discussion, and civic engagement among our members and the Denver community on the global issues that we present.
